My Only Possession is My Name
Is there one possession that we truly own? What do people bring when they go?
Reading through Ecclesiastes 1:1-10, I feel like indeed everything in this world is meaningless…
I wrote this song hoping to keep myself (and hopefully others) reminded that all the things in this world are but temporary (if not meaningless). All the possessions we have today will instantly be gone as soon as the last breathe is taken.
In the end, the only thing that I truly own is my name.
Here it goes. My Only Possession is My Name.
Have you ever dreamt of a life in style
A house of gold, that makes you smile
Or a Royce for a thousand and a mile
And be a king, was it all worthwhile?
Have you ever said “enough is enough”
The winding road so rough and tough
Alone in the dark, you’re giving up
When all you need was a floating raft.
Do you know that in the end
Your only possession is your name
No one to hold, oh – what a shame
Richer or poorer, are but the same.
Now all the diamonds that matters most
Power and privilege you proudly boast
And all the treasures that you so desire
Are just but smoke from a spark to a fire
Trespasses I beg to please forgive
Offenses forgotthen to you I give (1)
Comfort this mind of its sorry mess
Cleanse my heart from east to west.
Oh, don’t you think that in the end
Your only possession is your name
No golden buzzer for you to claim
For richer or poorer, we’re all the same.
So live this life as if it were your last
Step by step but not too fast
Smell the roses once in a while (2)
Feel the wind and offer your smile.
Life but once. Walk graceful walk free
Footprints for generations to see (3)
Life is beautiful, rigorous and fair
The star, the skies and the freshest air. (4)
For in the end, when I’m old and lame
Success and failure are but the same
Riches and wonders are nothing but a game
For in the end, my only possession is my name (5)
Song Meaning
(1) Trespasses I beg to please forgive. Offenses forgotten to you I give. I know, one way or another, I have trespass or perhaps hurt people. I honestly “beg” for your forgiveness. Equally so I have at the other end got badly offended, I will also work hard to forgive and to forget.
(2) Live life as if it were your last… Smell the roses once in a while. Many times, the past days I woke up to the tiny tunes of the chirping birds. Walking around Rene’s garden, I see the beautiful flower garden and thought “when was the last time I bend down and smell the roses?” Must have been more than 40 years ago!
(3) Life but once. Walk graceful walk free. Footprints for generations to see. In his 2012 writings, Papa wrote “Walk Gracefully, But Once“
(4) Life is beautiful, rigorous and fair. The star, the skies and the freshest air. Life can be harsh, rigid, and brutal. Yet, life is beautiful, and, is fair and will always be fair. When was the last time I thank God for the unseen air, or the morning sun that keeps me warm, and even the cool California spring.
(5) For in the end, when I’m old and lame, success and failure are but the same. Riches and wonders are nothing but a game. For in the end, my only possession is my name. Indeed, in the end. It becomes immaterial, whether successful or not as successful, rich or poor. Everything just become so unimportant… For in the end, the most important possession is just but your good name.
Inspiration from Proverbs 22:1
A good name is more desirable than greater rich; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.
