Life is a Circle

Good Times, Bad Times.

The last few days had me thinking profoundly about life. The many good and many bad, the many pleasant and many bothersome times, the numerous successes and some horrible failures. I am solely responsible for my life’s experiences, be they pleasant, or be they bothersome. Through it all, God have blessed me more than I deserve. For all the bad times, I have tenfolds more good times. I have near-perfect parents. I have good siblings. And, the best of all, God gave me Rene, my wonderful life partner. We both were given “life’s miracle” of the twins, Matthew and John. (Psalm 113:9)

Crossing into the Last Quarter

It suddenly occured to me that I have just crossed into the last quarter of life. It feels abrupt, or so I thought. But who can stop father-time from churning its gears? Who would have prepared for a crossover in life? Certainly, not me! It feels awkward and uneasy in many ways — physically and emotionally and spiritually. I remember telling Rene (some 30 years ago), that “my worst fear is growing old .”

I know with age comes experience and wisdom. I do have a better feeling of who and what I am, of my ‘abounding’ capabilities as well as my “many-more” limitations. Surely by now, I have a better understanding of mortality. This understanding helped me in worrying less about the insignificant things in life, and yet had me grasping every second and every minute that I can spend with my family.

John 3:16

On the spiritual side, at 60, I have become more appreciative of life and gratification at a higher level. The sense of belonging, of being a part of a greater plan that was created by God. I believe in John 3:16. I believe in Christ Jesus, our Lord and Savior.

Life is a Circle

With some inspiration from Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Boxer.” I wrote the words and basic chords of “Life is a Circle” and reached out to my friends Doug Haines and Elliot Sheridan, a mid-Wales musician. We completed the song in 5 days. And here it goes…

Life is a circle, turning round and round,
The beginning and the end comes but with a frown. (1)
The humor and laughter behind the comedy,
(2)
Covers the painful soul of tragedy.
Behind the riches and treasures of endless assets,
Hides the pain and strain with a bagful of regrets.
(3)

Life is a circle that goes up and down,
For better or for worse, for a crown or a clown.
Have you heard about the prince and the pauper, (4)
How the Son of Wales live the life of a commoner.
Or the tale that is the Beauty and the Beast,
How the prince appeared as she cried on her knees.

God made life a circle and never a straight line,
So we can leave the pain and sorrows behind.
Give yourself a break today,
Be happy today and everyday.
(5)

Oh life is a circle in dark clouds of doubt,
Up, up and away, around and roundabout.
Yet failures are but baby obstacles,
Small exercises to win greater battles.
I know success is failure turned inside out. (6)
That is what life really is all about.

So life is a circle, the moon and the sun,
Count all your blessings, it’s so much fun. (7)
A flick and a click, not a minute nor a second
A day or a month, live life when you can. (8)
If I must go I know, not a frown but a smile,
With John three sixteen, I’d travel in style.
(9)

God made life a circle and never a straight line,
So we can leave the pain and sorrows behind.
Give yourself a break today,
Be happy today and everyday.

Song Meaning

(1) Frown. I have always thought about why life has to begin and end with a frown.

(2) Behind the Comedy. One of the best loved comedian of our time, Robin Williams, lost the battle to depression behind the “humor and laughter”.

(3) The Rich and the Famous and the “Depressed? ” Why are the rich ich and the famous and the depressed? Surely, all the riches in the world cannot buy a second more breadth in life.

(4) Prince and the Pauper. The Mark Twain fictional novel about the Prince of Wales changing places with pauper. For my generation, perhaps something similar to Trading Places by Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd.

(5) God made life a circle… I personally believe that life is made a circle, and everything eventually falls into a cycle. Look at nature, see how things are running in cycles. The flower cycle, birth cycles, lunar cycles, water cycle, season cycles. Beautiful flowers fade and are immediately replaced by more beautiful flowers. Springs come after winter, or the assurance that dawn will come after the lonely night. If life where a straight line, beautiful flowers may not be replaced at all. God is good.

(6) Success is failure turned inside out. I borrowed this from the popular poem “Don’t Quit.”

(7) Count all your blessings, it’s so much fun. I thought about how much blessings I have received all my life. Near-perfect parents, loving siblings, my family – Rene and Matt and John. Yes, I am counting all my blessings.

(8) Live life when you can. For more than 3 quarters of my life, I have lived life to work. In fact, my main reason for living was to work. Is that not short of slavery? I am now learning how to live life. For I know, for sure, I only get to live life but once.

(9) If I must go, I know, not a frown but a smile, with John 3:16, I’d travel in style. Surely, soon, we will all be going. We do not know when and do not know how we are going. But, if I can, I would, go not with a frown. In my heart, I know, I will have Christ my savior.
