For a Better World

The day after Memorial Day 2020, we saw Covid-19 deaths hitting 100,000 in the USA. 80% of the population is believed to be “sheltered-at-home.” It is simply unbelievable, 100,000 in 3 months.

Three months ago, March 19, 2020 Governor Newsom orders all 40 Million Californians to stay home in the nation’s first state lockdown. The order took effect immediately and will remain in place “until further notice.”

6 days earlier, on March-13, I received a text from Matthew at 10 am that the school announced that school will be closed. I expectedly knew this will happen but did not reallize it can be sooner.

A little over 2 months after the California shutdown, the country hit 100,000 deaths! Its a pity that the presumed sourced that is Wuhan has reopened after 76 days of lockdown, while the United States is as of today on the 80 days since lockdown, and the virus is still increasing, now with almost 2,000,000 cases!

As American Idol presented the All-Star Line-up of contestants and past winners singing “We Are the World”, I felt a strange and weird feeling as my eyes started to tear. What Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson wrote in this epic song is exactly what the world needed. I can feel how this 35 year old song is more relevant now than ever. “We are the world, we are the ones who will make a brighter day.”

This pandemic has revealed the most good in most people. (Although I should say, there are still a few “bad and the greedy” ones around). Generally, the Covid-19 brought more good in people.

Have we learn to be patient? Have we start to enjoy the leftover or the not-so-good tasting food since the lockdown? Have you noticed people smiling even when there fast is mask-covered? Raising their hand to greet Hi, even when he avoided you with social distancing.

With inspiration from We are the World, I plated a simple tune in my mind and voice recorded and asked my go-to music friend Godwin to complete the song for me. As we worked on the music, I started writing the words. In a few days, I reached out to Denise and Vincent Bates of the JazzSuite. In 4 days, I have the song playing and ready. “For a Better World”

I see the sickness, sufferings and the deaths
Cruel and savage, as the venom spreads
A hundred thousand souls are lost
Dazed and confused in a dark holocaust.

I see responders, nurses and doctors too,
Touch the suffering sick and more than a few.
Drained in line of duty they gave,
Best foot forward with a foot in the grave.

1 20
I see the lockdowns, separations and shelter at home,
Empty street corners with no one to roam.
Face masks and gloves to keep your nerves
And we social distance to flatten the curves. Ohh

Beneath the confusions and all the fears,
Is the hands of God wiping away our tears.
Perhaps Covid was meant for us to step back
To restart, to reset and to get us on track. (back on track)

2 17
Reconnect with families, friends and foes.
Say love and peace to the highs and the lows.
The bluest seas and the clearest lakes,
Giving mother nature a much needed break.

2 44
Soon there will be parties and birthdays too
Barbecue and grills for me and for you.
Up to the mountains, we walk and we hike.
Back to the outdoors, all day and all night.

3 10
Soon there’ll be superbowl and N B A,
Champions in Olympics in full display
And soon, we’ll be marching us back to school, oh back to school
Back to our churches, oh boy, ain’t that cool?

3 37
Soon, we’ll all have a Merry Christmas time.
Of Frosty, and Rudolph and the drummer’s rhyme. (the drummer’s rhyme)
Greet each n everyone with a warm embrace
For a new gift of life from our saving grace.

4 03
It’s been a long long time to wait (time to wait)
For a better world, from fear to faith.
Liberation day, soon the time will come, yes it will come
Peace and joy for everyone.

4 30
Red and brown and yellow, black or white.
One big family, we need not fight. (no no)
Life is me and you and the human race, human race
Heal the world, make it a better place.

4 57
Behind or beyond the wall and the borders
A thousand miles apart, we are brothers
A little time to heal, and a little more space
Heal our world and make it a better place.

5 24
Heal our world, let’s make it a better place. Make it a better place
Heal our world, make it a better place.

…. for a better place, for a better world.
